Open Ended Question Functionality
Panoplai supports two types of open-ended questions: Open-Ended and Short Text. Both can be paired with media and visibility logic like any other question type.
Open-Ended
-
Default minimum character requirement: 20 characters (editable)
-
If the minimum is not met, the participant can still complete the study, but their response is marked as a validation failure in the raw data and will not show on the dashboard as a completed response
-
Be realistic about the types of responses you expect and adjust the minimum required characters as needed — it's easier to remove poor quality responses than to try to salvage ones that failed
Short Text

-
Default minimum character requirement: 3 characters (editable)
-
This format is ideal for quick inputs like names, brands, or platforms
-
For a question like “Which social media platform do you use most?”, you may want to lower the limit to 1 to allow for short answers like "X"
Capturing Sentiment & Emotion
You can choose to collect self-reported or AI-inferred sentiment and emotion after each open-ended response.
-
Self-reported: Adds two follow-up questions for the participant — one for sentiment, one for emotion:
- Sentiment: What best describes your previous response? Was it positive, negative, neutral, or mixed?
- Emotion: What emotion best describes your previous response? (A list of emojis is shown)
-
AI-inferred: Panoplai’s AI analyzes the language in the response and automatically assigns sentiment and emotion
To Enable / Disable Sentiment & Emotion:
Click the gear icon on any open-ended question and toggle "ask respondents for sentiment and emotion":
-
On = Self-reported
-
Off = AI-inferred
These tools help you go beyond surface-level answers and get a clearer sense of how respondents feel — without extra manual work.
