How to Use Cuts

A data cut is a way to compare different groups side-by-side within your results. Instead of filtering down to one audience, cuts let you view multiple segments at once — all within the same chart or data view.

Why Use Data Cuts?

  • Compare performance across age groups, genders, or customer types

  • Spot behavioral differences across audience segments

  • Test hypotheses (e.g., do power users think differently than light users?)

How to Use Cuts

  1. Click into the "Cut by" dropdown at the top of the Charts tab of the Results view

  2. Choose the Question, Demographic, or Distribution you want to cut by

    1. You can also cut by Saved filters, but this is the same as applying a filter.
  3. Panoplai will automatically split the charts into segments based on the selected variable

Example:

  • Want to compare Gen Z vs. Millennials? Apply a Cut on the age group demographic to view each group side-by-side on the same chart

Notes:

  • Panoplai does not currently support nested cuts, you can only cut by one variable at a time.
    • As a result, cuts work especially well when layered with Filters (e.g., filter to U.S. respondents, then cut by gender)
  • Statistical testing is automatically applied when Cuts are used and charts are converted to tables, helping you spot significant differences at a glance

Data cuts help you find patterns, spot gaps, and make more nuanced decisions without switching tabs or filtering back and forth.
