AI Topics: Customizing & Analyzing Open-End Themes

AI Topics help you automatically code open-ended responses into meaningful categories—fast. Customize the framework to analyze open ends on your own terms and visualize results in structured formats.

Generating AI Topics

Start by turning raw open-end text into actionable insights.

  1. Toggle to AI Topics.

  2. Click Generate AI Topics, if not already generated.

  3. Panoplai will auto-detect themes and group responses into main topics and subtopics based on meaning—not just keywords.

  4. Once generated, you can refine the framework and explore results in different view AI Topics via a Tree Map, Table, or Bar Chart. 

 

Adjusting the AI Topics Framework

You can refine the auto-generated structure to match your goals:

  • Add or Remove Topics/Subtopics – Create new categories or delete existing ones.

  • Reorganize the Hierarchy – Move subtopics between main topics.

  • Upload a Framework – Import a predefined structure from a previous study.

  • Regenerate with AI – Overwrite the current framework using Detect Topics With AI.

 

Assign Comments to Topics

After making adjustments to your framework, you'll need to analyze comments to recategorize comments into the new framework.

You’ll see two options:

  1. Regenerate AI Topics + Assign Comments
    1. Use this to fully regenerate and assign topics.
  2. Use Existing AI Topics + Assign Comments
    1. Use this option after making manual edits to the framework.
      1. You’ll then choose to:
        1. Assign All Comments: Use this to recategorize all comments.
        2. Assign Only Unassigned Comments: Use this to categorize only unassigned comments.

Unassigned comments are those responses collected after the AI Topics were first generated. These need to be categorized manually or triggered through the above step.

 

Analyze AI Topics

Once comments are assigned, you can:

      • View volume counts for each topic

      • Click into main topics to explore subtopics

      • Click tiles to filter related responses

      • Switch to Table view to see topics in bar chart format

AI Topics can be visualized in structured chart formats, making it easy to quantify and compare open-ended themes across segments.
