AI Moderation: Go Beyond Surface-Level Answers
What is AI Moderation?
AI Moderation helps you move beyond surface-level responses to deeper more actionable insights. Enable AI Moderation on every question type in a survey, not just open ends. As respondents answer, an AI moderator asks context-aware follow-up questions in real time — capturing richer insight at scale.
How it's different from other AI moderation tools
Many AI moderation tools on the market are built for open-ended, conversation-style interviews only. Panoplai's AI Moderation probes both quantitative and qualitative questions, and every follow-up is analyzable: it feeds directly into your quant dashboard and AI Topics coding, so you're not left with a pile of unstructured conversation transcripts to make sense of separately.
How to set it up
- While building or editing a survey question, click the AI probing icon either on the individual question or across the entire study.
- Select "Enable AI followup questions" and set a maximum of up to 3 follow-ups per question.
- Optionally, tell the AI moderator what to probe for or leave this blank and it will probe based on what it deems most useful based on the survey and question context.

Where to find the results
AI Moderation questions and responses are available in multiple areas of the platform to empower your analysis. You can find the results in the Charts Tab or the Transcripts Tab.
- On the Charts tab, navigate to the question using AI Moderation and you'll be able to see the questions asked and the responses given. For open ends, follow-up responses are automatically included in AI Topics coding, so themes surfaced in a follow-up show up in your topic analysis just like a primary response would.

-
A new tab called "Transcripts" is now available to see responses by participant. Here you can see every respondent's original answer alongside their AI-moderated follow-ups.
Good to know
-
AI Moderation adds to your survey length (LOI) since it's asking extra questions, so it draws on your project credits accordingly.
- Use AI Moderation selectively: adding follow-ups to every question in a long survey extends the length of interview for participants, which can degrade their experience and lower response quality.
